DERRY RUMBA MERCHANDISE
This advert appeared in the Apr/May 1989 issue of Derry Rumba fanzine. The design for t-shirts & sweatshirts featured a bomber on the front and fist on the back.
Don't know how Dee fans abroad felt about paying £50 for postage mind you..!!
I think they did miss the opportunity to sell Derry Rumbaba sponge cakes though!!

DENS-SCENE FANZINE - 1989
The very first issue of Dens-Scene fanzine. Based in sunny Stonehaven, this issue hit the scene in Aug/Sept 1989 and contains the usual kind of fanzine material - jokes - arab bashing - past matches - cartoons - quiz - puzzles - a preview of the new season - DFC's new signings - an overview of other fanzines - letters and a few other bits & pieces thrown in. A no bad debut actually.

STEVE MURRAY - 1963 to 1970
Stevie Murray looking rather schoolboyish in this shot taken in 1966.
Before Steve eventually settled in the right-back position, he had stints on the right wing, inside-right and even inside-left. The #4 shirt became his permanent one for a few years though. He also captained the team for a duration.
He played a total of 240 games in his 7 years at Dens.

SOUTH AFRICA 53 TOUR SOUVENIR
This rare item is a memento from Dundee's 1953 South Africa Tour. Being in SA for 2 months meant that the team attended many civic receptions in the cities they visited and during those occasions this commemorative medal was presented.
Big thanks to Paul Smith.

DUNDEE'S TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA - 1953
8 weeks Dundee FC were in South Africa for their summer '53 tour - 16th May to 15th July.
This was one of the Dee's legendary squads with players like Billy Steel, Alfie Boyd, Doug Cowie and Bobby Flavell, to name just a few, who were involved.
They played a total of 17 games - Won 15 - Drew 1 & Lost 1, and scored a whopping 70 goals along the way!
Some of the tour was captured on cine and the silent footage below is an example of what was shot in Johannesburg at the Rand Stadium on 11th July '53.
It's difficult to make out who's who during the match action but it does show the occasion very well and gives a good insight into just how popular the Dundee tour was.
Goalscorers in this game were - Flavell 3 - Turnbull and Zeising.

DFC ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
This strip is from a publication from the 1950's. It illustrates the history of the club, featuring things like when Dundee played at Carolina Port in the 1890's, the team parading the Scottish Cup in 1910 and the Dee winning the Scottish League Cup in the 1950's.

AGOG IN THE FOG!
This was one of those games that has since gone on to become part of DFC's history pages.
The match at Ibrox was played during Dundee's title winning season of 1961/62 - 11th November '61 to be exact - the result...Rangers 1 v 5 Dundee.
Apart from the amazing scoreline, two other aspects from the game will be remembered, the thick fog and Alan Gilzean getting 4 of the goals.
No need for me to write the details of the game here though when you can watch it yourselves below. To put you in the picture, however, there was no scoring in the first half so it's the second half action highlights. Unfortunately, the Dees 5th goal by Penman no longer exists, but Gillie's 4 more than makes up for it!
You can also click onto the programme above to read the large version.

THE NICE ONE CHANT - 1973
This chant cropped up around the terraces in 1973. The "Nice One ..." song came about when Totenham Hotspur released a record by Cockerel Chorus called "Nice One Cyril" which got into the pop charts. The single being a tribute to Spurs legend, Cyril Knowles. The tune caught on around the country and would be chanted at matches when a player in your team scored. The crowd would just replace Cyril with the name of the scorer.
For my wee Karaoke demonstration below, I have chosen Jocky Scott (sitting), who was Dundee's top scorer in 1973/74 when it was sung at Dens.
Incidentally, ex Dee, Alan Gilzean was still playing for Spurs in 1973 when the single charted, although I don't know if he sang on the record.
Anybody spot him on Top Of The Pops?
The tune also featured in a tv commercial sometime later.

BILLY DODDS - MAN OF THE MATCH - 1990
Billy Dodds receives the "Man of The Match" award at a Scottish Cup tie against United in January 1990.
1989/90 was Billy's first season at Dens and he went straight onto become the Dees top scorer that year. He then followed this by claiming top scorer again in 91/92 and 92/93.
He tallied up a total of 193 appearances in dark blue.
Also in the picture is Bill McLardy, the Tennents representative.

BILLY DODDS - HPF HALL OF FAME - 1990
Dundee fanzine - "It's Half Past Four..." - had this free poster in issue #4.
This was during the 1989/90 season and Billy Dodds was the star player & top scorer, his talents also helping him have the honour of being the first to be featured in the mags Hall of Fame.
It folded out into an A3 size poster and it was drawn by Stuart Sang.

ALFIE BOYD - 1947 to 1953
A couple of rare cards from the late 40's featuring Alfie Boyd.
Alfie has links with Dundee FC going way back to when, as a kid, he used to be ball-boy at Dens.
He signed as a player in 1947 and played in the left back / centre half positions up till 1953, and notched up a grand total of 234 appearances for the club.
He will always be remembered for scoring the vital goal at Hampden when Dundee beat Rangers 3-2 in the Scottish League Cup final. Alfie heading in the winner with just a few seconds remaining!

BERT SLATER AS COACH - 1989/90
Although Bert Slater will always be remembered as Dundee's top goalie in the early 60's, here is a picture of him a couple of decades later when he was Dee coach in 89/90.
A lesser known aspect of Bert is that he once appeared in a TV commercial for Wagon Wheels, the big round chocolate biscuit. The scene kind of resembled Custer's last stand, and Bert was one of the chaps who fell to the ground having been hit by an arrow. It's a wonder he didn't just put a bandage on it and carry on..!!

DEE FANS IN HEYSEL STADIUM - 1963
Here's a rare piece of film from March 1963. It's the final whistle against Anderlecht, and Dundee have won the European Cup quarter-final game 4-1 over at Heysel Stadium in Belgium.
A few Dee fans run onto the pitch, go over to keeper Bert Slater and carry him shoulder high along the length of the pitch. A gesture that gets a warm ovation from the crowd!!
