BILLY STEEL IN TARTAN - 1953

I isolated the Billy Steel image from the 1982-83 handbook and tidied it up a bit, because this is the only photo I have of him "in action" wearing the DFC tartan shirt. The picture would have been taken on Dundee's tour of South Africa in 1953.
Don't know if it's just a trick of the light, but when I was cleaning the photo I noticed it looked like Billy was wearing tartan/argyle socks too. If it is, then that's a piece of Dee strip trivia I never knew!

SHRINE SUMMER BREAK

Time for a wee summer break now, and I'll be back with more DFC goodies from the vaults in August.
Remember, all the Shrine Archives are still active and you can backtrack through them by clicking on the dates in the column on the right of the layout. New comments are being added to the older posts as more people find them, so there is always fresh material to catch up with.
And in case you're wondering, the wee Dee in the baggy breeks above, is Billy Steel, having a round on the St Andrews course in 1950.
DFC ye later!!

BILLY STEEL - THE #10 LEGEND

Billy Steel signed for Dundee in 1950. He scored in his debut game against Aberdeen and from then on the wee wizard achieved legend status for the remaining 130 games he played for the Club. His influence had a powerful impact on the team as he inspired the Dees to lift the Scottish League Cup 2 years on the trot, in 1951 & 1952. His talents were also in demand for the Scottish National team with 13 full caps earned during his 4 years at Dens. His last game for Dundee was in April 1954, and although he departed to live in the USA his legend lives on at Dens Park to this day where they have a Lounge named after him in his honour.
For a more in-depth insight into his life, I recommend a book titled "Billy Steel - Scotland's little maestro" by Bob MacAlindin.
And below is a wee Billy Steel tribute video for your viewing pleasure!.

1950'S BILLY STEEL CARD

The aptly named "Turf" cigarettes came out with the FAMOUS FOOTBALLERS card collection in the early 1950's. This is one of their original cards from the series featuring talented Dundee star, Billy Steel.
For you younger ones, back then a football used to be called a "tub", and a throw-in was called a "shy"...or "sheh" if ye wur oary!
