MIKE HEWITT - GOALKEEPER - 1970-74

Dundee were fortunate to have 3 great keepers on the go around the same era, however, this wasn't such good fortune for Mike Hewitt who found himself in the middle of, firstly, competing with Ally Donaldson in 1970 & 71, then going straight into battle for position with Thomson Allan in 1973 & 74.
Hewitt's best season was 1971/72 when he became the dominant keeper wearing the #1 jersey.
All together he played a total of 55 games in the 4 seasons he was with the Dee.
He then left Dens in 75 to play in the United States.
Not sure if he ever returned?!

DFC GOALS v AC MILAN - 1963

I've put a few items up on the Shrine relating to Dundee's games against AC Milan in the 1963 European Cup semi final, so I won't bother going over the match details again.
Instead I thought it was about time to show the Dees goals.
First is the Cousin goal in the San Siro ; followed by Gilzean's goal at Dens.
Lap it up!!

ALLY DONALDSON #1 - IN GOAL

Ally Donaldson was Dundee FC keeper for many, many years. The exact time span Ally was at Dens was - 1961 to 1972, followed by a 2nd stint from - 1977 to 1981, an incredible 16 years, which makes him one of the clubs longest serving players. He notched up a total of 408 games and played under 7 different managers, from Bob Shankly to Donald Mackay!
He was also a big favourite with the fans, and I can remember during the quieter moments of matches, the Derry would sing "Ally, Ally, give us a wave" and he would oblige!
Talking of Ally responding to fans, here he is answering questions sent into Shoot magazine in February 1971, giving his reply to what his greatest game was, how he deals with penalties and so on. Most of the qusetions were sent in from the Dundee area, so you may even spot someone you know!
You'll need to click the image to read the large version.

Below is a sequence of photos capturing one of Duncan's goals. The move starts with a pass by Bryce - JD does the rest!!

MISSING GOAL - FOUND

I'm sure all Dee fans will have bought the DFC "Official History" dvd by now and have given it pride of place in your collection.
On it there is a match featuring highlight footage of Dundee winning 4-1 against United at Tannadice played on 12th September 1964. The coverage starts with Dundee's 2nd goal, by Waddell, followed by 2 Jocky Scott goals. Missing is the Dundee opener, a fantastic lob by Alan Cousin. The above photo showing the moment the ball finds the back of the net.
Well, I have found that lost goal, and here it is below for you to see what you've missed.
Worth the wait, I'm sure you'll agree!!

5 YEARS OF FAB CAB

Argentinian, Fabian Caballero, was a stocky, strong, skillful striker who's first game for Dundee was in July 2000. A favourite with Dee fans, he was affectionately known as "Fab Cab", and was one of the few players to have his own individual chant.
He played a total of 117 games and scored 27 goals.
However, below is one of Caballero's goals that didn't count. The game against Hibs on 2 Feb 2003 was abandoned due to a blizzard.
You can also hear the supporters singing the Caballero chant after he scores.
Included in the video is Fabian leaving Dens after a selection of players were sacked when DFC went into administration in November 2003. He did, however, return a short while later for a 2nd stint with the club that lasted up till 2005.

THE DEES IN ALBANIA - 2003

A wee reminder of Dundee's return to the European football scene in almost 30 years.
14th August 2003 was the day that had Dee fans wiping the dust from their passports and preparing for some UEFA Cup action again.
KS Vllaznia, based in Shkoder in Albania was the opposition, and in this 1st leg tie Dundee managed to get the competition off to a great start, winning 2-0. Lovell and Novo popping in the goals.
Below you can watch some footage of the team & fans setting off for the game, followed by clips of the 2 goals from the Loro Borici Stadium. Commentary is in Albanian.

2 VIEWS OF A GRADY GOAL

The above picture of James Grady celebrating his goal, was taken on 6th May 2000 in a game at Dens against United. The Dees won 3-0, Falconer getting the other 2.
Below are 2 clips of the Grady goal viewed from opposite angles. The first is from the main Stand enclosure, and the second from the Derry gantry. It's a really good team goal, the move starting way back at the corner flag in our own half.
