SPRUCING UP DENS - 1989

A bit of restoration to the main stand, some repairs, a few licks of paint, and a wee bit of ground work, all going towards making sure everything is shipshape for the 1989/90 season to commence.
If you knew any construction workers, joiners, painter & decorators who worked on Dens back then, you may even be lucky enough to spot them on the footage below!

Dundee supporters run onto the pitch to celebrate. I think this may be for the 3rd goal rather than full time.

THE LONE RANGER?

Not 100% sure who this mystery keeper is, all alone in the Dens sunset.
I've zoomed in, and he looks a bit like Andy Goram to me. So if that's the case, the photo could be v Rangers, or more likely v Motherwell around 1998.
I asked the person who took the snap, but his memory is blank on this one.
If anybody can spot any clues, or can positively ID the goalie/game, then feel free to drop it into the comments.

DEE PLAYERS BATTLE THEMSELVES - 1976

Allan and Wilson appear to be having an argument as Gemmell goes over to try calm things down. Fighting amongst themselves being a bit of a tell-tale sign that things aren't going well in the Dee camp, and in this case Dundee were struggling to stay in the newly formed SPL in 1976.
This was the penultimate game of the season against Motherwell at Fir Park - the match ending in a 1-1 draw.
The following week we played them again in the final game of the season at Dens and won 1-0, but it wasn't enough to prevent us going down.
3 teams ended up with 32 points, with Dundee relegated on goal difference.
If we had won the above game, we would have stayed up and United would have gone down.

DENS UNDER CONSTRUCTION - #1

Got a batch of photos showing the new Stands at Dens being constructed around the new millennium. Here we see the flattened area where the old Provie Road enclosure was, and it's replacement being pieced together.

THE LAST STRAW

Back in the days before undersoil heating, in order to protect the playing surface from frost, they used to cover the pitch in straw. Come match day, all the straw would then be raked to the side of the pitch, as in the above photo.
This picture was taken during a Scottish Cup tie against Falkirk on 25th Feb 1979, Dundee winning 1-0 with a penalty by Pirie.
The Dee were in Div 1 at this time having been relegated in 76, but despite the pitch looking like a farm yard, Dundee finished top and got back into the SPL.

DENS PARK ADVERTISING

This diagram of Dens Park goes back to the old ground design, around 1998/99, when we were still in the SPL.
It shows the available advertising space and pricing.

DENS IN THE FUTURE?

This is an artists impression of how the present Stadium was originally supposed to end up like. The Dens Road enclosure was to include a gymnasium plus a few other features, but lack of funds didn't allow for the 3rd and final stage to be built. Maybe one day, although I couldn't help notice there is no television gantry in the design. Tut, tut!

DENS IN THE PAST

A rare and ancient action picture from Dens Park taken in 1903. This was when the Dee played in an all dark blue strip. The North Stand was extended a few years later then eventually replaced with the present Stand in 1921.
The 1902-03 season was a pretty good one for Dundee, finishing in 2nd position in the League, reaching the semi final of the Scottish Cup and winning the Forfarshire Cup and Dewar Shield.
It was a particularly good year for goalie Billy Muir, letting in only 12 all season.
The highest attendance at Dens in 1903 was 24,000 in a Cup game against Hibs.
Thanks to DG.

LAST LOOK AT OLD DENS

This is how Dens Park looked in the 1998/99 season. A final glimpse at the old layout before it became the Stadium it is today.
The 98/99 season saw the Dee return to the SPL after winning promotion the previous season, and so we finished the 20th Century in 5th position, which was pretty good going for our return back to top flight futba.
Below is another view of old Dens from the air caught on film.

FROZEN PITCH

I don't know what all the fuss is about with frozen pitches. When Dundee's undersoil heating failed a few years ago, they just got on with it!

DENS PARK IN 1988

This aerial shot of Dens Park was taken in 1988. It shows the bench seating in place around the Provost Rd - Dens Rd section.
The 87/88 season was a rather average year in the SPL, with the Dees finishing 7th.
Tommy Coyne was our top scorer with 37 goals.
The way some of the cup ties worked out meant that Dundee ended up playing Dundee United an incredible 9 times that season!
We did get a trophy however, winning the Tennents Sixes indoor tournament... so no too bad!

WHEN BATMAN VISITED DENS - 1976

On a snowy December in 1976, Dundee FC had a Gala Day at Dens Park. There were stalls laid out selling various goods, the fans could meet the players, and there was music and other entertainment on throughout the day. Because it had snowed the night before, the pitch was cleared so that a charity game could take place, with the snow being swept to the side of the pitch. In amongst the entertainment taking place on the day was a scheduled appearance of the Batmobile, and sure enough, in through the Tannadice Street gate at the side of the Stand came the Batmobile, with Batman & Robin waving to the crowd from inside the car. The car drove around the track at the side of the pitch then stopped in front of the Stand. Out popped the Dynamic Duo to pose beside the Batmobile and greet the crowd. Bad move!! While they were posing and waving, a group of kids ran over to the snow that was piled up at the side of the pitch and started chucking snowballs at them. They were absolutely pelted! Next thing was the hilarious sight of the Caped Crusaders scarpering back into the Batmobile for protection then screeching off back out of Dens. You could almost see the words POW - SPLAT - THUD pop up as Dundee's bairns chased the crimefighters back to Gotham City!!

PROMOTION DAY AT DENS - 1998

A great shot from in the crowd looking across at the Provie Road end.
The reason for the party atmosphere? It was the day Dundee returned to Dens after becoming First Division Champions the week before at Starks Park. Over 8,000 turned out on 18th April 98 to cheer the team on as they were presented with the Champions trophy in the centre of the park.
There was a match to be played too, against Ayr Utd, and it finished up 1-1.
