DUNDEE FC SQUAD - 1990-91

The 1990-91 season was a rather average kind of year, missing out on promotion, finishing 3rd in the First Division. We did at least win some silverware though, the B&Q Centenary Cup, beating Ayr Utd 3-2.

THE LONE RANGER?

Not 100% sure who this mystery keeper is, all alone in the Dens sunset.
I've zoomed in, and he looks a bit like Andy Goram to me. So if that's the case, the photo could be v Rangers, or more likely v Motherwell around 1998.
I asked the person who took the snap, but his memory is blank on this one.
If anybody can spot any clues, or can positively ID the goalie/game, then feel free to drop it into the comments.

2ND DERRY RUMBA T-SHIRT - BACK

Getting good value from the Derry Rumba design dept, here was the DFC tour schedule for the 90/91 season. A bit hasty with the forecast though, we didn't get promoted until the following season.

2ND DERRY RUMBA T-SHIRT - FRONT

This colourful t-shirt was the Derry Rumba design for the 1990/91 season. Having been relegated, the fightback was on!!

BERT SLATER AS COACH - 1989/90

Although Bert Slater will always be remembered as Dundee's top goalie in the early 60's, here is a picture of him a couple of decades later when he was Dee coach in 89/90.
A lesser known aspect of Bert is that he once appeared in a TV commercial for Wagon Wheels, the big round chocolate biscuit. The scene kind of resembled Custer's last stand, and Bert was one of the chaps who fell to the ground having been hit by an arrow. It's a wonder he didn't just put a bandage on it and carry on..!!

DUNDEE FC PENNANT FROM THE 90'S

A more up to date DFC pennant here, from sometime in the 90's. A kind of satin material this time with a nice simple but smart design.

SHAW ON TARGET - 1995

George Shaw about to commence his goal celebration after bangin' one in against United.
He actually scored 2 in this game at Tannadice on 18th Nov 95 - Dee winning it 3-2 with Wieghorst getting the 3rd.

THE FULL SQUAD - 1997/98 SEASON

They seemed to have crammed in as many players & staff as they could find for this team picture. It turned out to be "the more the merrier" on this occasion though, as Dundee did finish top of Div 1.
"Firkin Brewery" was sponsor.

DEE TOP FOR NEW MILLENNIUM

This was the shirt design Dundee wore during the 1999-2000 season. The jersey in the photo actually belonged to Dee player Gavin Beith. Dundee born Gavin was with the club for around 4 or 5 years but didn't really break through into the full team. In fact, it appears he seems to have only played a couple of games for the club. He was competing with the likes of Nemsadze, Khizanishvili & Smith for position so it was tough to get in the team. He was in the squad who was taken through to Hampden in the 2003 Scottish Cup Final, but again, didn't play.
The year 2000 saw the Dark Blues finish 7th in the SPL.

DFC FANZINE #3 - EH MIND O GILLIE

For those who don't speak the Dundee lingo, the title "Eh Mind O Gillie" translates as "I remember Alan Gilzean".
In this issue from Feb 1995 the emphasis is on laughs. Chock-a-block with witty banter, amusing observations and good gags, with the occasional poem thrown in!

DFC FANZINE #2 - IT'S HALF PAST FOUR... AND WE'RE 2-0 DOWN

This Dundee fanzine had been on the go for a year by the time this issue above, dated Easter 1990, came out.
Contents include concern over the Dee's relegation battle, reviews of other fanzines, amusing pieces on Ross Jack, Vince Mennie & Albert Craig, an interview with ex Dee Terry Christie, match reports, music, letters and the usual bundle of funny articles & gags squeezed in.
This particular issue also includes the first "Hall of Fame" poster, namely, Billy Dodds, who was top scorer that season.
The cover depicts the return of Jim Duffy to the team after having been away at Falkirk for a while.

DENS PARK OPEN DAY - 1997

Dundee FC had an open day on 12th July 1997 that featured a variety of entertainment. This included a guest appearance by Australian actress Isla Fisher. At the time she was mostly known for her role in TV soap "Home & Away" but she has since gone on to star in many top movies.
This event at Dens was part of the build-up to the start of the new 1997/98 season, which the Dees ended as First Division Champions. So, Dundee's team also played in starring roles, home & away!

LAST LOOK AT OLD DENS

This is how Dens Park looked in the 1998/99 season. A final glimpse at the old layout before it became the Stadium it is today.
The 98/99 season saw the Dee return to the SPL after winning promotion the previous season, and so we finished the 20th Century in 5th position, which was pretty good going for our return back to top flight futba.
Below is another view of old Dens from the air caught on film.

DUFFY #2 - THE MANAGER

Jim Duffy had 2 stints as Dundee manager -
1993 - 1996
2002 - 2004
Duffy took the Dees to 2 cup finals at Hampden as manager. League Cup in 1995 & Scottish Cup in 2003. However, it was more than just footballing managerial qualities he contributed to the club as his involvement behind the scenes when Dundee were going through troubled times, assisted in the club's survival.
Above is Jim Duffy with one of his "Manager of the month" awards in 2003.

DUFFY #1 - THE PLAYER

Jim Duffy had 3 stints as a Dundee player -
1984 - 1988
1990
1992 - 1996
A Dens favourite, Duffy rarely put a foot wrong in defence and wasn't afraid to get stuck in as the above photo shows, from a game against Rangers in 1987 in which he got booked for his efforts.
He played a total of 238 games for the Club.

PROMOTION DAY AT DENS - 1998

A great shot from in the crowd looking across at the Provie Road end.
The reason for the party atmosphere? It was the day Dundee returned to Dens after becoming First Division Champions the week before at Starks Park. Over 8,000 turned out on 18th April 98 to cheer the team on as they were presented with the Champions trophy in the centre of the park.
There was a match to be played too, against Ayr Utd, and it finished up 1-1.

1997/98 CHAMPIONS PRESENTATION

Over 8,000 turned out at Dens to celebrate DFC being crowned First Division Champions on 18th April 1998. The 2 images above show the team being presented with the trophy in the centre of the pitch, surrounded by camera crews and press. The game itself was against Ayr Utd and finished 1-1. Technically, we won the League the week before at Raith Rovers.
