Billy Dodds receives the "Man of The Match" award at a Scottish Cup tie against United in January 1990. 1989/90 was Billy's first season at Dens and he went straight onto become the Dees top scorer that year. He then followed this by claiming top scorer again in 91/92 and 92/93. He tallied up a total of 193 appearances in dark blue. Also in the picture is Bill McLardy, the Tennents representative.
A couple of rare cards from the late 40's featuring Alfie Boyd. Alfie has links with Dundee FC going way back to when, as a kid, he used to be ball-boy at Dens. He signed as a player in 1947 and played in the left back / centre half positions up till 1953, and notched up a grand total of 234 appearances for the club. He will always be remembered for scoring the vital goal at Hampden when Dundee beat Rangers 3-2 in the Scottish League Cup final. Alfie heading in the winner with just a few seconds remaining!
Although Bert Slater will always be remembered as Dundee's top goalie in the early 60's, here is a picture of him a couple of decades later when he was Dee coach in 89/90. A lesser known aspect of Bert is that he once appeared in a TV commercial for Wagon Wheels, the big round chocolate biscuit. The scene kind of resembled Custer's last stand, and Bert was one of the chaps who fell to the ground having been hit by an arrow. It's a wonder he didn't just put a bandage on it and carry on..!!
Alan Cousin was at Dens from 1955 to 1965, and as a consequence, has him in Dundee's top 10 longest serving players of all time with a whopping 384 appearances. Being a striker, he has also banged in rather a lot of goals in his time - 141 to be precise - the club's 4th highest scorer. He was the Dees top scorer 3 seasons on the trot - 1957/58 - 1958/59 - 1959/60. The era he played saw him win the Scottish League title in 1962 and take part in the following famous European Cup run. In 1959 he represented Scotland twice at international level. The above photo was taken in his final year with Dundee in 1965.
Dundee were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the 1st round during the 1961/62 season. This meant they had a couple of spare days in their calendar. To fill them, they arranged two friendlies with Arsenal, one away and one at home. The programme above is from the first game at Highbury on 17th Feb 1962 - score 2-2. The return match at Dens on the 10th of March was a 1-0 victory to the Gunners. The games didn't have much of an impact on Dundee's season though as we went on to become Scottish Champions that year!! Ian Ure, who played against Arsenal, ended up playing for the London club the following year.
On the subject of Pele, here is another wee Dundee link. This photo showing Jocky Scott battling it out with Pele was taken in the USA in 1977. Jocky was playing for the Seattle Sounders at the time (Gordon Wallace also played for them) and this crunch match against Pele's team, New York Cosmos, was the League decider. Unfortunately, Cosmos, who also had Beckenbauer & Carlos Alberta in their team, won it 2-1. The Sounders did beat Cosmos earlier in the same season with Jocky scoring the only goal!
