JIM DUFFY TESTIMONIAL PROGRAMME - 1987

This is the programme for Jim Duffy's Testimonial that took place on 6th December 1987 at Dens.
It was actually supposed to be a game in aid of, what was thought at the time, the end of Jim's playing career after a horrendous knee injury against Rangers in September 87, but as everyone knows, he came bouncing back in 1990!
Charlie Nicholas was in Dundee's team for this game, and in fact scored one of the goals which saw the Dee come out on top over a Premier League Select side. DFC winning 5-3 to be precise.

DFC'S USA TRIP - 2003

Dundee took part in an "International Soccer Series" in North Carolina - USA, in July 2003.
This is the programme cover for the tournament.
There were 4 teams who participated, with the Dee playing 2 games - the 1st against locals, Raleigh CASL Elite in which we won 5-0, and the 2nd match against a team from Honduras called CD Marathon, a 1-1 draw.
All the games were played at SAS Stadium in Cary.

CENTENARY CUP FINAL - 1990

The word silverware is usually mentioned when a team wins a trophy, however on this occasion, Dundee ended up with a piece of crystalware for the display cabinet. It was a one-off prize to mark the centenary of the Scottish Football League, in 1990.
The game against Ayr Utd finished 3-2 to the Dee, after extra time.
No need for me to give you the lowdown on the match, as you can read about it yourself in the cutting.

AC MILAN PROGRAMME - 1971

A game I was at, and a belter too!
Although Dundee were 3-0 down from the 1st leg at the San Siro and this return match seemed like mission impossible, it being AC Milan we were playing and the UEFA Cup, made for a great atmosphere at Dens. I was 13 and remember watching their star player,Rivera, the year before on the telly in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The star of this show though, wasn't from Milan, but was the Dee's Duncan Lambie, who's runs at goal were causing havoc on the night. All that pressure paid off as we won the game 2-0, goals by Wallace & Duncan. Although it wasn't enough to go through on aggregate, it certainly was a victory to remember!
You can watch the goals on this link...

LEEDS PROGRAMME - 1968

After beating Zurich in the Fairs Cup Quarter Finals, Dundee were up against the mighty Leeds United in the semi's. Leeds really were mighty back then with the likes of Bremner, Giles, Lorimer, Charlton etc, the team who eventually went on to win the trophy.
This game at Dens on 1st May 1968 was a 1-1 draw, Bobby Wilson scoring for the Dee.
The away leg at Elland Road ended 1-0 to Leeds, and the programme & ticket can be viewed on the Shrine - just type "Leeds" into the search box.

FC ZURICH PROGRAMME - 1968

This programme was for the Quarter Final of the Fairs Cup. Zurich were no pushovers, having beat Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon to reach this stage. Dundee, however, managed to beat them home and away, with this 1st leg tie at Dens on 27th March 1968 finishing 1-0, a goal by Jim Easton. We also won the 2nd leg in Switzerland by the same margin, with Sammy Wilson getting the winner.

BOBBY GLENNIE TESTIMONIAL - 1986

A well deserved testimonial match in '86 for Dee's Mr Dependable, Bobby Glennie.
Man City the opposition for this one... 2-2 the final score, with Glennie banging in a penalty.
His time at Dens was a lengthy one - 1978 to 1989, a stint which saw him play in a total of 376 games, and making it into the top 10 of the clubs longest serving players.

Ally Donaldson signed the cover of this Leeds programme, dated 15th May 1968. It was a game Ally played in, it being the 2nd leg semi-final of the Fairs Cup. However, the legendary Leeds team got the better of us on the night, winning 1-0 at Elland Road - making it 2-1 on aggregate.

EDINBURGH VICTORIES IN CHAMPION'S SEASON #2

The 2nd victory in Edinburgh during the 1961/62 season was not long after the Hibees game. The Hearts match took place on 13th January 62 . A 2-0 win for the Dee, with goals from Cousin & Gilzean.
Dundee actually won all 4 encounters involving the capital clubs that season. All points gratefully received!!

DENS DERBY - SEPTEMBER 1961

Another programme from Dundee's title winning season.
This game against United took place on 9th September 1961 and it has to be said we ripped them apart on the day with a 4-1 scoreline.
Goals by Penman, Smith, Robertson and a Utd o.g. - and 20,000 through the Dens turnstiles.

AGOG IN THE FOG!

This was one of those games that has since gone on to become part of DFC's history pages.
The match at Ibrox was played during Dundee's title winning season of 1961/62 - 11th November '61 to be exact - the result...Rangers 1 v 5 Dundee.
Apart from the amazing scoreline, two other aspects from the game will be remembered, the thick fog and Alan Gilzean getting 4 of the goals.
No need for me to write the details of the game here though when you can watch it yourselves below. To put you in the picture, however, there was no scoring in the first half so it's the second half action highlights. Unfortunately, the Dees 5th goal by Penman no longer exists, but Gillie's 4 more than makes up for it!

The result was a 5-1 Dee victory.

DUNDEE v ARSENAL - 1962

Dundee were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the 1st round during the 1961/62 season. This meant they had a couple of spare days in their calendar. To fill them, they arranged two friendlies with Arsenal, one away and one at home.
The programme above is from the first game at Highbury on 17th Feb 1962 - score 2-2.
The return match at Dens on the 10th of March was a 1-0 victory to the Gunners.
The games didn't have much of an impact on Dundee's season though as we went on to become Scottish Champions that year!!
Ian Ure, who played against Arsenal, ended up playing for the London club the following year.

MEADOWBANK THISTLE PROGRAMME - 1992

Meadowbank Thistle had a relatively short life. Their existence in this format only covered the 1974 to 1995 period. Before this they were called Ferranti Thistle, then in 1995 the club moved out of Edinburgh's Meadowbank Stadium and relocated to Livingston, changing their name accordingly.
This match programme was a League Cup tie. Dundee won 3-0, with goals from Dodds, McGowan & Campbell. A whopping crowd of...898 turned out for this football feast. Couldn't have shifted many programmes that day!
Meadowbank did have a bit of a cult following throughout the UK, due to Radio 1 DJ John Peel. Liverpool mad Peely adopted Meadowbank as his second team and would actually go see them play when he was gigging around Scotland. He would read out their scores during his shows and sometimes even give the lowdown on a game he caught.
Not sure if he witnessed this Dee victory mind you!

SEATTLE STORM v DUNDEE FC - 1986

Talking about Seattle (previous post), here is another one the city's teams, Seattle Storm.
This programme is from when Dundee played them as part of the Dee's summer tour of USA & Canada in 1986. There were 10 matches in total, this one above took place on 6th June.
Ex Dee, Jimmy Gabriel, was coach for Seattle Storm when this match was played, but despite his time at Dens, his team tactics weren't enough to outplay the visitors from Dens on this occasion as the dark blues won the game 2-1. Goals by Mennie and Harvey.
