JOCK FERGUSON AKA HANNIBAL

Here's Jock flaunting a Dee scarf in the middle of the desert in Egypt.
The date is 26th November 1995, the day of the Scottish League Cup final v Aberdeen.
Work commitments meant that Jock couldn't get through to Hampden for the game, so when he was playing Hannibal for an American TV documentary about ancient civilisations, he managed to brandish the blue & white club colours while having a bit of fun during an outtake sequence, just to remind everyone his thoughts were elsewhere!!
Big thanks to Jock.

DEEFAX

It doesn't happen very often so thought I'd capture the moment of the Cup Final score on view on BBC's text service.

CENTENARY CUP FINAL - 1990

The word silverware is usually mentioned when a team wins a trophy, however on this occasion, Dundee ended up with a piece of crystalware for the display cabinet. It was a one-off prize to mark the centenary of the Scottish Football League, in 1990.
The game against Ayr Utd finished 3-2 to the Dee, after extra time.
No need for me to give you the lowdown on the match, as you can read about it yourself in the cutting.
And you can click the link here to view the game -

DFC CUP FINAL CREST - 1980

A nice close up of the badge on the players shirt for Cup Final day in 1980. This being the Scottish League Cup of course, played at Dens on 6th December that year. Not such a good result on the day though. All that fancy sewing and not a stitch to show for it..!!

DEE FANS LEAVING HAMPDEN - 2003

And so the Dundee supporters pour out of Hampden and make their way to the buses to head back home.
Perhaps it wont be too long to the next visit.

2003 CUP FINAL RADIO BROADCAST

They gave it a good go but Dundee finished runners up in the 2003 Scottish Cup final. Here is the team going over to applaud the Dee fans who travelled through to Hampden for the occasion.
If you weren't in amongst the 20,000 Dundee supporters at the match, you probably watched it live on television. Below, however, is a rare recording of the radio coverage. Although I have the full match, this is only the first 10 minutes of the broadcast to give you an idea how it sounded across the airwaves.

DEE FANS - THE NEXT GENERATION

Here's the new generation of Dundee supporters having a bit of fun down at the side of the pitch at Hampden in 2003.
I couldn't help notice the scoreboard - Dundee 5 Rangers 4 - I must have missed that game!!

DFC IN THE NEWSPAPERS: #3 - 1973

King Gordon is of course, Gordon Wallace, the scorer of the only goal in the League Cup final against Celtic at Hampden. 16 December 1973 is the date on the Sunday Post and the stories in it give a reminder of the conditions behind the scenes which played a part in the game's early kick-off - i.e. power cuts, weather and strikes.
Sunday's SCOTSPORT, who showed the League Cup final highlights, was broadcast at 2.05pm, in between The Saint and the Galloping Gourmet!

DFC IN THE NEWSPAPERS : #1 - 1910

An ultra rare item which is now 99 years old. The Glasgow Herald dated - Thursday 21 April 1910. Price, one penny. This of course is the day after Dundee won the Scottish Cup and so it does contain a review of the match.
It has 16 huge pages - much larger than the Courier. There are no photos at all in the paper, there aren't even any headlines as we know them today, just small boxes with short news articles and adverts. There are news items on Roosevelt, Kitchener, Mark Twain, and closer to home a piece about the plans to build the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. I don't think these would have been discussed much in the Hulltoon pubs that day!
So, getting back to the MAIN story, the Scottish Cup Final 2nd replay at Ibrox which ended Dundee 2 v 1 Clyde. Dee scorers - Bellamy & Hunter.
A segment of the match report reads as follows - "Dundee, who played brilliant football, obtained the leading goal; Hunter, after a short individual run, giving McTurk no chance with a shot from short range."
The cup was presented in the Ibrox Pavilion to ex Bailie Robertson, on DFC's behalf.
Total takings were £793.
To read the above match report in full, or grab a copy for yourself, click onto the image to enlarge it.
The vid below is just a couple of shots of the actual paper. The accompanying music was recorded in 1910 too!

DUNDEE'S LEAGUE CUP WIN - 1973

It was 35 years ago today Dundee won the Scottish League Cup. 15th December 1973 was the big day and it was a match I was at. I'd be aged 15.
I remember making a customised scarf for the special occasion. I came up with the idea of adding the words "DUNDEE FC" to my regular dark blue scarf, so what I did was get on old white pillowcase, cut all the letters out from it then painstakingly sew them all onto the scarf. Took me all evening but the end result was pretty smart!
We Dundonians were up against the odds that day - Celtic being in their 9 in-a-row season. We were up against the elements too - the atrocious winter weather nearly had the game cancelled, and we were up against the government - there were power cuts and transport strikes all over Scotland. Despite all that was chucked at us, we still came out on top.
Here below is a wee film that gives a glimpse as to what the Dees trip to Hampden was like on the day we beat the odds!

DUNDEE BRING HOME THE LEAGUE CUP - 1973

Saturday evening, 15th December 1973, and here is Gordon Wallace parading the Scottish League Cup on returning back to Dundee from Glasgow. It was of course Wallace who netted the winning goal at Hampden, against Celtic, that won us the trophy.
You can't tell from this photo just how awful the weather was that Saturday, but I was one of the one's who braved the horrendous conditions to travel through on the day to watch the final. Then again, we didn't really notice the weather after the final whistle went!
Also in the picture is, George Stewart centre and Bobby Ford on the right.
