Dundee took part in an "International Soccer Series" in North Carolina - USA, in July 2003.This is the programme cover for the tournament.There were 4 teams who participated, with the Dee playing 2 games - the 1st against locals, Raleigh CASL Elite in which we won 5-0, and the 2nd match against a team from Honduras called CD Marathon, a 1-1 draw.All the games were played at SAS Stadium in Cary.
This rare item is a memento from Dundee's 1953 South Africa Tour. Being in SA for 2 months meant that the team attended many civic receptions in the cities they visited and during those occasions this commemorative medal was presented.Big thanks to Paul Smith.
8 weeks Dundee FC were in South Africa for their summer '53 tour - 16th May to 15th July. This was one of the Dee's legendary squads with players like Billy Steel, Alfie Boyd, Doug Cowie and Bobby Flavell, to name just a few, who were involved.They played a total of 17 games - Won 15 - Drew 1 & Lost 1, and scored a whopping 70 goals along the way!Some of the tour was captured on cine and the silent footage below is an example of what was shot in Johannesburg at the Rand Stadium on 11th July '53.It's difficult to make out who's who during the match action but it does show the occasion very well and gives a good insight into just how popular the Dundee tour was.Goalscorers in this game were - Flavell 3 - Turnbull and Zeising.
Dundee set off for Austria shortly to get some pre-season training in and to play a couple of matches while they're there.63 years ago, the Dee also visited Austria for some pre-season friendlies, which included games in Germany and Italy. This was a kind of "entertaining the troops" tour, as they played all their matches against British Army teams.The medal above was dished out to those who took part in the game in Graz, Austria, on 15th June 1946. A Dundee victory, with the match finishing 2-1.
This programme is dated 17th May 1972. It was 1 of 7 matches Dundee played in on their tour of Australia & New Zealand, spanning the period 13th May to 28th May. The above game, which took place in Adelaide, finished Australia XI 1 v 2 Dundee FC. The A&NZ tour was a big success for the dark blues, winning all 7 of their games, notching up an amazing 53 goals and conceding only 6. One of their encounters ended up 16-1..!!The stats do make it look like that the Aussies may have been a bit amateurish, hence the large scorelines, but later 6 of the players who played for Australia in the above match went on to become involved in their National team who qualified for the World Cup in Germany 1974, having finished top of the Asia & Oceania Group.As regards the Socceroo's fate in 1974, well they lost to both East and West Germany, ( the latter being eventual cup winners ) but they did manage a draw with Chile... which is more than they achieved against us!
My brother took this picture of the Dee Club banner in Paris, 1998. The lads weren't there for a Dundee FC fixture though, they were there as part of the Tartan Army for the Scotland v Brazil World Cup tie. As good a reason as any to have a bit of fun and flaunt the flag!
