There were 26,500 at Muirton to see Dundee win the title in April 1962 against St Johnstone, and probably 20,000 of them were Dees.

1st DIVISION CHAMPS - 1998

This is the kind of image we're all hoping to see repeated in a few months time - a Dundee player holding the 1st Division Championship Trophy aloft.
On this occasion, it is Barry Smith flaunting the silverware back in 1998.

In 92 we won the 1st Division and were promoted back into the SPL.

EDINBURGH VICTORIES IN CHAMPION'S SEASON #2

The 2nd victory in Edinburgh during the 1961/62 season was not long after the Hibees game. The Hearts match took place on 13th January 62 . A 2-0 win for the Dee, with goals from Cousin & Gilzean.
Dundee actually won all 4 encounters involving the capital clubs that season. All points gratefully received!!

EDINBURGH VICTORIES IN CHAMPION'S SEASON #1

2 away wins in Edinburgh helped us add more points to our title winning season of 1961/62.
The first was against Hibs on 25th November 1961. A 3-1 Dee victory with goals by Gilzean, Penman & Smith.

AGOG IN THE FOG!

This was one of those games that has since gone on to become part of DFC's history pages.
The match at Ibrox was played during Dundee's title winning season of 1961/62 - 11th November '61 to be exact - the result...Rangers 1 v 5 Dundee.
Apart from the amazing scoreline, two other aspects from the game will be remembered, the thick fog and Alan Gilzean getting 4 of the goals.
No need for me to write the details of the game here though when you can watch it yourselves below. To put you in the picture, however, there was no scoring in the first half so it's the second half action highlights. Unfortunately, the Dees 5th goal by Penman no longer exists, but Gillie's 4 more than makes up for it!

Following on from the previous item which featured Hugh Robertson reading about the City Centre celebrations in the Sunday Post when Dundee won the Scottish League in April 1962, here is the 1st of 3 photos of the team on the balcony of the City Chambers in the City Square. This joyous moment took place on Saturday evening, a few hours after beating St Johnstone at Muirton, 28th April.

READ ALL ABOUT IT!

47 years ago, yesterday, everybody in town was reading about Dundee being Scottish League Champions. Here is Hugh Robertson indulging in The Sunday Post dated 29th April 1962, catching up with the previous days events at Muirton and celebrations in the City Centre.

DUNDEE v ARSENAL - 1962

Dundee were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the 1st round during the 1961/62 season. This meant they had a couple of spare days in their calendar. To fill them, they arranged two friendlies with Arsenal, one away and one at home.
The programme above is from the first game at Highbury on 17th Feb 1962 - score 2-2.
The return match at Dens on the 10th of March was a 1-0 victory to the Gunners.
The games didn't have much of an impact on Dundee's season though as we went on to become Scottish Champions that year!!
Ian Ure, who played against Arsenal, ended up playing for the London club the following year.

CHAMPIONS OF SCOTLAND BOOK

Another book that is a must for your shelves is this one by Kenny Ross - Dundee, Champions of Scotland, 1961-62.
Here's a bit of what it says - "1961-62 was a golden season for Dundee Football Club. They became Champions of Scotland by winning the Scottish League title for the first and, to date, only time in their history. They then became Princes of Europe the following year with their fabulous European Cup adventure. For any club outside the old firm to win the Scottish title takes something special, and the Dark Blue side of that time was exceptional."

1962 - IN COLOUR!

This familiar image of Dundee captain, Bobby Cox, taken in 1962, has previously only been viewed in black & white. This tinted version gives you an idea of how the photo would have looked had the photographer used a colour spool.
Similarly, the famous film of Dundee winning the title at Muirton the same year was also shot in black & white. Well I had a go at colourising that too. It's not exactly in glorious Technicolour but if you ignore the green sky, you'll see I did at least manage to get the Dees shirts dark blue.
Can't see it winning any Oscars though!

WHEN DUNDEE WON THE TENNENTS SIXES - 1988

This football tournament took place on 24 & 25 January 1988 and was held at the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre in Glasgow.
Here is the lowdown -
Teams taking part : ABERDEEN - CELTIC - DUNDEE - DUNDEE UTD - DUNFERMLINE - FALKIRK - MORTON - HEARTS - HIBS - MOTHERWELL - NOTTINGHAM FOREST - ST MIRREN.
They were split into 4 Groups each with 3 teams, with the winners & runners-up going through to the quarter finals.
Sunday 24th had all the Group section games.
Monday 25th had the quarter finals, semi's and final.
Dundee were in Group 1 with Aberdeen and Morton.
Dundee's results were as follows -
Group stage:
Dundee 9 v 3 Morton
Aberdeen 1 v 2 Dundee
Quarter final:
Dundee 4 v 3 Dundee Utd
Semi final:
Dundee 4 v 1 Aberdeen
Final:
Motherwell 2 v 3 Dundee
Dundee win Tennents Sixes Trophy and are the tournament's top scorers.
